Some people think that Ivy League schools are the alpha and omega of the ultimate college dream. Others think that big state universities with a developed brand will satisfy their needs. The truth is that schools vary and an extensive research into even the lesser-known institutions is needed to choose something that truly fits you. Here are several important points to think about before making a final decision.

1. Look at yourself critically.

The point in life when you stop being a kid and become a full-blown adult person is a very important one. This is the time to ask difficult questions. What are your strong suits? What are you bad at? What do you want to achieve in your life? Where do you see yourself in thirty years?
Of course, the answers to these questions will change over the years. Ask your friends and family for help if you think it’s necessary.

2. Think about the size

Whatever your aims at college are, don’t feel like you have to go to a big school to achieve them. On average, liberal arts campuses accommodate from four to five thousand of students. This is because a limited number of people creates a community more naturally. You need friends and a support system to be successful.

3. A well-developed brand does not equal good education

Do a little research. Think of famous people you truly admire and find out which college they’ve attended. Now, ask someone that you consider successful. What you are likely to find out is that very few of them went to Ivy League schools. Good fortune in life has less to do with the elitism of college and more with personal traits and luck.

4. Don’t rush to choose a major

Most young people are just not qualified enough to make a decision that would influence their life so strongly. Many change their majors several times before settling and graduate on time anyway.

5. Don’t trust other people’s opinions

Media is full of stories on how hard it is to get admitted anywhere nowadays. While it is true that some elitist colleges admit only one in ten applicants, more students are accepted than rejected every year. This is why you need to investigate all colleges that might fit your interests.

6. Don’t be afraid of student debt

Many people who opt to skip college do so because they think it is way too expensive for them. For those who are ingenious enough, though, there are a lot of opportunities like financial aid or scholarships to help fund their education.
