Morality is the term employed in everyday activities of a person and in every circumstance, and the judgment we make. To be a person who is said to be moral, one must have the ability to differentiate what is right, and what is wrong on his own. However, to be in a moral situation, is the ability of one to be capable of differentiating the right things from the wrong things. There is no universal of the right and wrong things. Morals are practices that are being made by and demarcated by one's society, philosophy, religion, or individual conscience. Most of the people believe that law and morality is not essentially the same thing. On the other hand, ethics are rules that are set to guide one’s morals.
The world is rapidly deepening into immorality, and as a result forgetting its ethics and moral values. Therefore, this can only be controlled by collaborative measure. In other words, people should use there spheres of influence to the situation in the right direction so as to retain morality in society. The current generation has no values and that’s why crime and drug abuse has become a global disaster. Sex is no longer considered to be for married couples; instead it is practiced by children as young as 12 years old. However, civic engagement revolves around the issue of representation of society or the public by an individual or a group of individuals collectively and can help in restoration of morality in society. The central role of civic engagement is so as to ensure that the society at large benefits in the long run. This is done from a social, political and economic perspective. Civic engagement seeks to enhance the skills that tackle the problems facing a particular society. Civic engagement seeks to enhance equality, freedom and justice to all individuals in the society.
Ethics is there to govern the concerned people to run the business morally and legally. As time moves, most people are more concerned about making profits and leading in the business world than following the rule book in running the business. Loyalty means being responsible and accountable for anything that happens in an organization, or any place. Managers are now interested in the results more than how you got the results. Later managers will not completely discard the ethics, rules and morals that have always been followed, but they will be more lenient than how they were in the past. Concerns about ethics will not remain central in managerial thinking. As times changes, so are some of the beliefs, rules and terms we work with (Lawrence & Weber, 2008).
The business world is changing, and so are some of the rules that govern it so that they might be able to accommodate the changes. Different countries and societies are also affecting this. In some countries, one must strictly stay within his/her boundaries of authority. In others one can go beyond his/her boundary of authority as long as it is meant to make a certain job done that will benefit the business. At some point, some concerns will become less important as years go by. Managers are becoming freer with their employee and so the strictness and harshness has subsided. People have come to know that no single job or position is permanent. They have also known that it takes two to tangle and so no business can entirely survive with a ‘one man’s show.
As we can now observe, there are a lot more businesses than there were some ten or twenty years ago. This means that the competition is higher than it was then. People are willing to do almost anything just to stay ahead of the competition. In future the situation will not be any better. The competition will be stiffer and so many businesses will do almost anything to be ahead of the track. Am not suggesting that everything will get out of control and everybody will run their businesses how they wish, am just suggesting that the rules will more lenient and the managers will concentrate more on the results more than how one got them. This will not happen to all the managers because there are those who will still keep the rules (Beauchamp, 2004).
To begin with, in today’s world morals are hardly used when it comes to doing business. Business men and women are more focused in making huge amounts of profits and making as much money as possible without worrying who gets hurt, who looses (as long as it is not them), who needs help, etc. as it has been mentioned earlier, most of the businesses in today’s world have clear goals and missions: to make as much profit as possible and gain as much power, prestige authority as possible. Let’s take an example of a drug trafficker. Who can convince me that the businessman/lady does that business because of any other good intentions apart from making money, getting power and prestige? What could probably come out of drug trafficking? According to the theory of morals, we have seen that one has to accomplish an objective just for the sake of doing it without any attachments or benefits of whatever kind.
Good morals are expensive. If one was to completely be honest in his business, he would have to sacrifice something in one way or another. They would have to sacrifice a lot profit and wealth making and save their morals, or sacrifice their morals and make some good amount of money. If one gets to do their own research, most of the people who are involved in illegal businesses make a lot of money e.g. drug traffickers, human traffickers, sellers of untaxed products like cigarettes, alcohol, cars, just to mention but a few. The world we live in is changing at an alarming rate as a result of all the new discoveries that have been made over the years. These new discoveries have been aided by the availability of better learning facilities and equipment. These were not available in the early days. As scientists continue to discover and invent new equipment, the world is adapting them and incorporating them in the societies. As a result, the world we are living in is slowly forgetting and abandoning morals that used to govern society (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2008).
According to Beauchamp (2004), consumer habits otherwise known as consumer behavior refers to the aspects about a consumer that mostly influence the choices they make in purchasing products. Consumer habits influence the consumer’s decision making process, as far as purchasing a particular product is concerned. Consumer habits can be as a result of their lifestyle, motivation, personality, knowledge, perceptions, beliefs, and feelings, ethnicity, past experiences, market mix factors and attitudes. Moreover, the environment also plays a crucial role in consumer habits. Some of the environmental stimuli that influence consumer habits may include political situation in the country, the technological advancement in that country, the culture practiced by the community, the demography of the country and the economy of the country. Consumer habits are hardly ever constant and they keep on changing their habits with time. This results in them also changing their expectations of the businesses around them, causing them to spend less money.
Competence on the other hand is quite a challenge to health care workers as they have to make sure that the patient fully understands his or her situation and is also informed on the options at hand. The assessment of competence is ethically critical as without competence one cannot give a valid consent. For consent to be a patient will have to have understood and made a decision concerning the matters that are to take place. This is where voluntariness comes in and poses another ethical dilemma. If a patient is rushed into a hospital in a critical life situation then the consent of a relative will be required. In the course of the operation if there are other complications that arise, the consent of the surrogate decision maker will be sought though it might be against that of the patient before he or she was incapacitated. There are also challenges of who decides the best interest especially the obligation of children and quality of life decisions such as those faced by rehabilitation counselors (Kolb, 2008).
